The Blessings of Being a Musician

This week has been an example of why I love being a musician.  One night I was directing young musicians in an all city orchestra festival.  Then on a Saturday afternoon I spent a few hours with friends playing jazz for a few thousand audience members.  Finally, my church music group lead music as many of our young people publicly confirmed their thoughtful acceptance of Christ at their confirmation mass.  In all three cases I shared time with great friends playing and singing music and in all three cases, I believe God was present and pleased.  I have recently accepted the position of Principal Elect at the Catholic school in my town and as a result many people have said something to the affect of, "It's a shame you'll be giving up music."  What they don't seem to understand is that giving up music is impossible.  There is no such thing.  My role in music in my community may change a little but the thought of "giving up music" will never cross my mind because music is a part of my life the same way breathing is.  I thank God for the blessings that being a musician have brought to me.  Making a living doing what you love to do is a privilege.  For many years I've written psalms and people have been able to used them for their masses and other worship services.  I will continue to write psalms as needed for my own music ministry and post them to Score Exchange.  I hope that you continue your ministry in music and pray for your success in sharing God's glory through the music you play.

Have a great day,
Perry
